Meet the team

Trix magazine was co-founded by Jess Weiss and Carly Schwartz. Angela Altus and Amanda Spurlock joined the Trix team this summer. They’re supported by a growing advisory council of media, digital, advertising, and technology professionals.
Jess Weiss

Jess Weiss

Jess Weiss began her career in the nonprofit sector, consulting and fundraising for organizations focused on economic development and education. Between jobs, she spent a year traveling solo in West Africa to learn about current human rights issues in the region and work with nonprofits supporting refugees and students. In 2013, she switched gears to a career in Learning and Development in high tech, and went on to earn a second M.A. in social-organizational psychology. She’s been at Google for eight years, where she currently works on curriculum and faculty strategy for its Executive Leadership development programs. She fills her free time with family, friends, and any opportunity to jump on an airplane, most recently to track and hike alongside wild mountain gorillas in Uganda.

Carly Schwartz

Carly Schwartz

Carly Schwartz spent two years running the San Francisco bureau of The Huffington Post and two years as the company’s deputy national editor. She then moved to Mexico City for a microfinance fellowship and later traveled further south to Panama, where she opened a journalism school at a sustainability research institute in the jungle. In addition to HuffPost, her work has appeared in Quartz, VICE, GOOD magazine, Atlas Obscura, San Francisco magazine and Burning Man’s Black Rock Beacon. She’s been at Google for two years, where she founded and now runs the Daily Insider, the companywide news platform. In her spare time, she writes and speaks about mental health issues and facilitates writing workshops at her San Francisco co-op.

Angela Altus

Angela Altus

Angela Altus kick-started her career in the agency world at two women-run communications firms, where she worked with everyone from startups and celebrities to global non-profits and Fortune 100 companies. She pivoted to open her own freelance photography and creative director business to raise the profile of female voices, both domestically and abroad. Her travel stories have been published in outlets including BBC Travel and USA Today, and she partners with nonprofits to profile women’s organizations and local community leaders across Haiti. Angela was also the lead New York photographer for Shameless, a premier body-positive portrait studio, where she worked with clients to help counteract the negative influence media has had on a women’s view of her own physical beauty.

Amanda Spurlock

Amanda Spurlock

Amanda Spurlock: Proud Detroit area native turned Brooklynite, Amanda got her start in the social world by defining how a small business could use social, helping grow the community for a New York City restaurant group. She then led social efforts at restaurant rating and review company Zagat, where she won her first Shorty Award. She’s currently leading social and video strategy for the Google Earth team at Google. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in Sociology from The New School for Social Research in New York, where she focused on Sociology of the Media. In her free time, Amanda enjoys figure skating as well as drinking coffee with her husband, Paul.
